kateniestrom:

I ended my month-long European journey in Krakow.

After coming from Budapest, traveling back up to Krakow felt a bit like coming full circle as it was more reminiscent of the first countries that we visited on our trip.

Despite it being right next to Germany, Poland actually reminded me a lot of the Czech Republic. We never used the metro system, so the constant use of trams reminded me exactly of Brno. Actually, everything except for the town square really looked like Brno to me.

The town square looked exactly like a scaled-down version of Old Town Square in Prague.

The most fascinating aspect of Krakow to me was the fact that the entire town square was built on top of the old town square. You can go underground to the Cloth museum and actually see remnants of the old city, and if you go out to the clubs at night like we did on Bridgett’s birthday, they’re all underground in shops and markets that used to be part of the old town as well.

My favorite academic activity that we did in Poland was go to the Jazz club on the first night. The place had such a cool vibe and we were so close to the stage. I just loved how casual it was in comparison to the other performances that we attended in other countries. The band was so talented, too, and it amazed me how talented they continued to be once they let audience members come up and perform with them. It was such a cool experience.

My favorite extracurricular activity of the trip was going and seeing one of Leonardo Da Vinci’s paintings on canvas (one of only THREE IN THE WORLD). It was amazing, I still can’t believe that I was in the same room as one. It was exhibited in the Wawel Castle and they also listed all of the speculations as to who the girl in the painting could have been and other stories behind the painting.

I just can’t believe that I can say that I’ve seen a real-life Da Vinci. Wow.

If you’re looking for food in Krakow, the best meal that I had was at the Greg & Tom Beer Garden and Hostel. They had it all; wifi, great food, World Cup football on a big screen. It was great. And because it’s a hostel, they actually offer ONE FREE MEAL A DAY. So if you go in there and like what they have prepared for their meal, YOU DON’T EVEN HAVE TO PAY. It’s the greatest thing ever.

It’s located in the town square and the Google map says that it’s an 8 minute walk from the Town Square Tower but that’s a total lie. It’s wayyy less.

The food was really good, it was a really cool place to meet people, and if I went back I would definitely consider staying there.

Overall, Poland was a great place to end my trip. It quieted things down a bit for us from Budapest and I think it made me ready to go home. There was good shopping, great food, a very interesting tram system, and I couldn’t have asked for more.

Until next time, Poland

do widzenia!
