Wojtek’s Way
I was born in Pińczów in 1952. I moved to Kraków when I was nineteen. My life started change a lot since I cam here. It took more than ten years to celarly realise where i was living, to realise what Kraków is. It’s kind of hard work to understand what Kraków is.
1 Stare Miasto
Oh, it changed since I was young. It was grey and the only colourful place was Galeria Obrazów pod Bramą Floriańską. Now it has become totally colourful, commercial and very kitch. Cafes, shops, crowds and so on …
2 Duszpasterstwo Akademickie
…it was a whole world there… the most important people of various disciplines gathered there to resist the Soviet regime. The concept and ideas of the “Solidarność” movement were develeoped within the student cicrles involved in. So, Kraków was the starting point of movement that brought change to the situation of the whole Soviet Block. And people who don’t know about Duszpasterstwo and what was happening inside its walls cannot know anything about Kraków.
3 Knajpy
I remember the “Klub Pod Gruszką” on Szczepańska st. where writers, journalists, etc. used to gather in the 70s. There were two popular student places in Kraków: one is “Pod Jaszczurami” and second “Zaścianek”. Another important place I used to visit around that time was cafe “Lili”.
4 Kazimierz
Well, Kazimierz is known as the Old Jewish Town, although only a small district was actually inhabited by Jews. But then it was extended almost to the whole Kazimierz town. Initially Kazimierz was shaped following the Wisła river, actually along the part of it that doesn’t exist anymore, as it was filled up with sand: it is now known as Dietla Street.
5 Stajnia
…it was time of prohibitionism, not absolute though. One could get alcohol but not as much as one would have wanted to have. So there were some smart people selling vodka illegally; one of them was a woman working as a concierge at “Dom Kultury” in the Kazimierz district, now a pub called “Stajnia”.
6 Skałka
Walking from Skałka to Wawel one can see an almost empty and unnoticeable area. But this place is really not empty. This place is full of history and spirit, Polish spirit. And in this emptiness one can experience the whole aspiration for freedom of a private citizen in relation to the state.
7 Rynek
When I was young, I used to go to Rynek at night to listen to the hejnał. Being alone there, it seemed to me that the hejnalista (trumpeter) was playing especially for me…
