KRAKÓW NATIVITY SCENE
It’s our Christmas tradition
of Cracow in Poland, anywhere else is unprecedented anywhere else in
Europe and in the world. It is a unique cultural phenomenon on a global
scale. I szopkach Krakow I know almost everything, because he I create
these little masterpieces of art and I’m one of the; up to 60 people in
the world that create crib Krakow (all these people live in Krakow, as I
do, and giving the number, I gave the number of people who every year
take part in the famous Krakow cribs contest [organized by the
historical Museum of Kraków], for which a specially made crib, but
normally in the correctness thereof involved about 170 people; only
some, as Ifor years, every year take part in this contest), but for sure
I will present the story of Krakow cribs and competition, with the
website of the city of Krakow Historical Museum:
The Kraków’s Crib
is a slender multilevel tower–a very embossed small building made from
light, non-persistent material. The characteristic trait of it,
especially now, is that it contains a lot of processed and linked
elements consistent with Kraków’s ancient architecture. It is supposed
to be a suitable place of presentation of mystery of the God’s Son
birth. This tradition comes from Kraków’s in the 19th century and it’s
far away from every other tradition in the world. This custom comes from
ancient cult of Jesus birth place in Bethlehem.
In the second half
of the 19th century, the society of bricklayers and builders in Kraków
formed a new kind of guild, it was the cribs’ makers guild. They used to
create two kinds of cribs: small, without the small theatre, to put it
under the Christmas tree, and the big ones (even up to 3 meters high)
with the show played by puppets to the accompaniment of especially
written songs. World War I has stopped the tradition of Christmas plays.
The tradition was reborn after the first competitions for the most
beautiful crib had been arranged in 1937. Unfortunately, although the
tradition of Christmas plays could not be recalled, a new one arose -
cribs build especially for the competition. The Kraków’s Museum of the
History, as a organizer of these competitions and the after competition
show, have collected every crib since 1945. At the moment there are 177
items which makes the collection the biggest among the official ones.
There are cribs there of all leading artists since 1945.
On the
basis of this collection, instead of strict rules of building the crib
it is easy to find out the development and changes of this art because
of used material, lighting, construction, architecture, embossing,
colours and the personalities of the crib. These personalities are to
symbolize the times we live, or remind about the anniversaries or other
important events of the history. The architecture distinguishes the
Kraków’s cribs from others. In the first competition’s cribs we can see
the stylized St. Mary’s Church tower and the baroque domes of the
Kraków’s churches.
Lately the inspiration were the City walls, the
Barbican and the St. Florian’s Gate. In many cribs we can also find the
Renaissance attics of the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), crenulated tops of
the Gothic’s churches, gavial windows with pinnacles, colourful stained
glass and many more themes. For some of cribs makers the most
inspirational is the WawelCastle. They very often attaché the Sigmund
cathedral theme. For Witold Gauch inspirational were the Gothic’s
churches’ altars: the church of the Dominican friars, Franciscans friars
and the Corpus ChristiChurch. The Kraków’s crib is not only a fantasy
about the atmosphere and architecture of our city, but also very good
lesson of the history. A beautiful and thoughtful crib teaches, amuses
and moves.
Every year on first Thursday of December before noon
around Adam Mickiewicz monument in the Main Square crib makers are
gathering to show their newest crafts. Crowd of Kraków citizens,
families, tourists and TV camera operators’ teams surrounds them.
Museum (which organizes contest since 1945) employees are registering
applications. Each crib has got unique own registration number.
All
cribs are quite picturesque. For many years, number of applications is
quite stable - between 120 and 160, where most of applications are
crafts made by children and teenagers.
At the midday, when a bugle
call is played at St. Mary’s church’s tower, crib makers are taking
their crafts to Museum at Krzysztofory Palace, where Jury of the contest
is located. Jury is being lead by Museum’s Director and it employs
ethnologists, art historians, artists, employees of Historical and
Ethnographical Museums.
The Kraków Nativity Scenes contest is open,
it can be applied to by anyone disregard the age or place of living.
Each contestant can apply with maximum of three cribs. Jury is
evaluating them anonymously, and authors are revealed only after prizes
and commends announcement.
Before jury would focus on detailed
evaluation of particular cribs, they need to decide if all cribs are
fulfilling the contest criteria. If the crib is not fulfilling them to
be recognized as Kraków’s crib, it cannot take part in the contest even
if it is the most beautiful crib ever seen.
Cribs qualified to contest are being evaluated in three categories accordingly to age of their authors.
1. Senior artisans cribs: above 18 years old
2. Youth’s cribs
3. Kids’ cribs: up to 14 years old
During work, Jury is classifying cribs accordingly to four size categories:
1. big (above 120 cm)
2 . medium (70 to 120cm)
3. small (15 to 70 cm)
4. miniatures (up to 15 cm)
Every qualified craft is evaluated accordingly to criteria set many
years ago. Competing cribs gather points (1 to 5 scale) for: accordance
to tradition, architectural design, colours, puppets, movable elements,
fresh ideas, decorations and overall aesthetic value. Jury can also
present for a prize crafts that are not fulfilling the above criteria,
but being recognized as considering other, highly appreciated values.
Since the first contest, there is a custom, that winners are rewarded
with cash. The city’s president, City Council, cultural institutions,
private companies, editors’ board of known publications and private
persons, has founded these prizes.
Currently main sponsors are
government authorities, social societies, companies and personals, which
are hard to be named particularly due to huge number of them. We cannot
however omit the initiative of Magdalena Krychnalska and Krystyna
Reinfuss-Janusz, daughters of Roman and Zofia Reinfuss, which have
founded the prize of their mirthful parents’ name.
Ceremonial
announcement of contest results and diplomas giving is usually happening
on Sunday after jury session, in Fontana’s Room of the Krzysztofory
Palace at 12:00. The Museum’s director is inviting then everyone to
visit contest exhibition, which takes place in temporary exhibitions
rooms, on the Palace ground floor.
The exhibition takes place from
second week of December until the mid of February next year. Due to its
popularity, it is open every day. During exposition it is visited by
thousands of people.
Every year the Museum is purchasing few Cribs for its own collection.

St. Mary’s Basilica on the Main Market Square in Kraków is one of
the town’s famous landmarks. I already showed you the Altarpiece inside
of the church, now you can see the exterior.
Extraordinary are the two unequal towers, the higher one is 81m high,
the other one is 12m smaller. According to an ancient legend, the towers
were built by two brothers – each worked on one tower. When one of them
finished his tower, he was worried that his brother could outdo his
work and build a higher one. To prevent that, he stabbed him to death
and the church tower was left unfinished.

The Main Square of Kraków (Rynek Główny) is the central element of the city and no tourist will ever visit Kraków and don’t walk on this square. Obviously that leads to a feeling of overcrowding all day long and you can often here complain from Kraków’s people regarding the masses of tourists.
What can you do? The solution as often: Get up early. In the morning there are cars allowed on the Main Square, but there are much less people around. Definitely, it is much calmer than during the day or evening. Anyways, I was surprised by how many people were up already at such early time. Luckily it was possible to shoot some photos without many people on it.
On this photo you can see the Kraków Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) with the Adam Mickiewicz Monument in the foreground. The sun just made its way over the roofs and throws the town’s silhouette on the walls of the Cloth Hall.
