Church Of St. Giles

Situated in Grodzka Street at the foot of Wawel. Erected in the 1^st half of the 14^th century and reconstructed at the end of the 16^th century, the Gothic one-aisle church has a presbytery closed on three sides and covered cross-and-rib vault. Outside the church, on the presbytery wall, there is the painting of Virgin Mary with Child dating back to the 17^th century. Inside there is the late-Renaissance main altar, remains of St. Hyacinth’s tomb (1581-83) moved here from his chapel in the Dominican church. Portals in the presbytery and the aisle, stalls and decoration of the presbytery walls were composed in 1629 also from the elements of St. Hyacinth’s tomb. At the rood beam one should note the late-Gothic group of the Crucifixion: the crucifix of c. 1520, the statue of St. Mary and St. John of c. 1470. The Katyń Cross was placed at the church in 1990.
