image

1.Krakow was the capital of Poland from 1038 to 1596.

2. Krakow is one of the oldest cities in Poland, dating back to the 7th century.

3. In 1978, UNESCO placed Kraków on the list of World Heritage Sites.

4. Also in 1978, Karol Wojtyła, archbishop of Kraków, was elevated to the papacy as Pope John Paul II, the first non-Italian pope in 455 years and the first ever Slavic pope.

5.The Old Town district of Kraków is home to about six thousand historic sites and more than two million works of art.

6.Kraków is a major centre of education. More than ten university or academy-level institutions offer courses in the city, with 170,000 students.

7.The metropolitan city of Kraków is known as the city of churches. The abundance of landmark, historic temples along with the plentitude of monasteries and convents earned the city a countrywide reputation as the “Northern Rome" in the past. The churches of Kraków comprise over 120 places of worship of which over 60 were built in the 20th century.

8.Krakow is referred to by various names in different languages. The city is known in Czech and Slovak as Krakov, in Hungarian as Krakkó, in Lithuanian as Krokuva, in German as Krakau, in Latin as Cracovia, in French as Cracovie, in Portuguese as Cracóvia and in Russian as Краков. Ukrainian and Yiddish languages refer to it as Krakiv (Краків) and Kroke (קראָקע) respectively.

9. According to legend, Krakow was founded by and named after the mythical ruler Krak, who built the town above a cave occupied by a ravenous dragon.

10.There are five nature reserves in Kraków, with a combined area of ca. 48.6 hectares (120 acres). Due to their ecological value, these areas are legally protected.

11. There are about 7.3 million people that visit Krakow every year, nearly 10x the actual population. Attractions include the historical monuments, recreation, visiting friends, and business activities.

12. The University of Krakow (Jagiellonian University) is the second oldest university in central Europe, founded in 1364 by King Casimir II the Great.

twistedredladybug:

Last week, while we were having the national holiday Corpus Christi, we went also out for a walk in the Main Square. It’s always good to stretch your legs, especially if during the week - not only the working hours - one is sitting in front of the computer more than 8 hours a day. A little walking never killed nobody and we don’t plan to stop :) The weather was amazing so while we walked in the city center, next to Sukienicce and Mariacki I managed to capture a few reflexions in the mirrors of the shops around the square.

More about that here: http://twistedredladybug.blogspot.com/2014/06/reflexions-take-2.html

polishfootnotes:

Once more, I took a stroll through these labyrinthine streets. This time with my camera eyes and their shutters clicking fast. My focus was turned to the crosses of buildings jutting out of the hot cement.  Then again to the people – each of which was making a pilgrimage to a different place but still making a stopover here, in Cracow

Cracow with its Calvary of the main square where amongst a blissful bustle, the champagne laughter of tourists mixes with sobs of the homeless. Cracow, the haven of pigeons who get trampled constantly by the hurrying feet of businessmen. Cracow, with its narrow streets that crisscross like synapses in the brain. Cracow with its cathedrals of smoke and smog. Cracow with its crowds of trees which proudly wear golden-green crowns of leaves. Cracow with its crazy bikers and couples kissing endlessly on lonely benches. Cracow, the city of my imagination, the city of my early twenties, a city of love. A city of great history and the city of my past-to-be.

Thus strolling and thinking I regarded once more the solitary bugle player who climbs the steps of St. Mary’s Basilica every hour. His call has always advised me to „look sharp!”, „stay awake and alive!” His acute note will haunt me for years to come, like a persistent perfume of the past. His music will reach my ears across continents, wherever I happen to find myself in this wide, wild world.
